Menon begins Nepal visit on mixed note

NEW DELHI: The first high-level contact between the new governments of India and Nepal began on a mixed note in Kathmandu on Saturday with
Indian foreign secretary Shiv Shan-kar Menon reaching an agreement with Nepal PM Madhav Kumar Nepal on fast-track cooperation and facing protests.


Twenty-two demonstrators, including a young film maker, were arrested from two separate protests, policesaid. Controversial director Manoj Pundit, whose documentary Greater Nepal: In Quest Of Boundary seeks restoration of the Nepali land ceded during the Sugauli Treaty, was arrested along with a student, Sunil Nepal when a rally in Kathmandu turned violent.

More protesters demanding an end to Indian encroachment under the banner of Unified Nepal National Front, an organisation that is asking both India and Britain to scrap the treaty, were arrested when they tried to show black flags to Menon.
