Indian ambassador meets Nepal’s leaders in Bund Day

Indian ambassador meets Nepal’s leaders in Bund Day

TGW

Nepal’s capital Kathmandu remains completely paralyzed and life came to a grinding halt due to the Bund sponsored by the local indigenous ethnic Newar Community, today, June 1, 2009.

No public vehicles could be located in Kathmandu’s otherwise congested roads and the entire shops are closed that provides the metropolitan city a deserted look.

Yet braving the Bund, a White colored Mercedes Benz carrying a highflying dignitary with Diplomatic Number Plate 22 is moving from one political corner to the other.

Guess who?

The Indian Ambassador to Nepal Rakesh Sood early in the morning met with the Nepali Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala and later during the day met with K.P. Sharma Oli, the UML influential leader.

Both Oli and Koirala are taken in Nepal as Indo-centric leaders.

Sood, as usual, met Koirala at his private residence in Maharajgunj, Kathmandu and provided some instructions.

Sood’s mental agony is visible from the manner he is traveling from one door to the other and apparently, in the process, pushing the names of his preferred ones for the post of the ministers to be inducted in the Cabinet.

The delay in the expansion of the cabinet led by the UML, with the fall of the Maoists led government, has put the neighbor in the South into a difficult position.

With Maoists heavily coming down against India day in day out, blaming it entirely for the fall of their government, Sood in his meet with the two leaders told them point blank that any further delay in the cabinet expansion will not be taken in good taste by his country-the former British colony.

Sood has met Mr. Madhav Kumar Nepal four times within a week or so after the latter got elected as Prime Minister of this country May 23, 2009.

Indian ambassador to Nepal Rakesh Sood held separate meetings with Nepali Congress president Girija Prasad Koirala and UML leader K.P Sharma Oli on Monday, reportedly asking them to expand the cabinet at the earliest.

Sood met Koirala at the latter's Maharajgunj residence in the morning and discussed the current political situation, especially issues related to cabinet expansion. He is known to have told Koirala that further delay in giving full shape to the cabinet would reflect badly on the peace process.

Similarly, in his meeting with Oli, the Indian ambassador voiced similar concern over the delay in cabinet expansion.

The meetings with Indian ambassador, who was engaged in high-level political parleys right after the election of the new Prime Minister, came as the UML-led coalition scrambled to expand the three-member cabinet owing to internal dispute in the coalition partners.

Sood has met Madhav Kumar Nepal at least twice after he was elected Prime Minister. nepalnews.com June 01 09

Last Titanic survivor, a baby put in a lifeboat, dies at 97

Millvina Dean taken ill with pneumonia in England, after Hollywood stars DiCaprio and Winslet came to her aid

The last living survivor of the Titanic, Millvina Dean, has died at the age of 97 in Southampton after catching pneumonia.

As a two-month-old baby, Dean was the youngest passenger on board the giant liner when it sank on its maiden voyage with the loss of more than 1,500 lives.

Her parents had decided to leave England for America, where her father had family in Kansas and hoped to open a tobacco shop.

The Deans had not chosen to be aboard the Titanic, but because of a coal strike they were transferred to the ship and boarded it as third-class passengers at Southampton.

Her father felt the crunch of the ship's collision with the iceberg on the night of 14 April 1912, and went up to investigate. He returned to their cabin telling his wife to dress the children and go up on deck.

Dean, her mother, and brother were placed in lifeboat 10 and were among the first off the liner out of the 706 passengers and crew who escaped.

Her father, however, remained aboard and was among those who drowned when the giant ship finally went down in the early hours of next day.

Dean, born on 2 February 1912, had been in hospital last week with pneumonia, having worked as a secretary until her retirement. Her death came just a month after Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, stars of the Hollywood blockbuster about the disaster, stepped in to help pay her nursing home fees. The pair joined with James Cameron, the director of the Oscar-winning film, to donate £20,000 to The Millvina Fund.

Dean lived at Ashurst in the New Forest, not far from where she set sail on the liner. In the last year she had to sell some of her family's possessions at auction to pay for her stay in the nursing home.

Items included a suitcase filled with clothes given to her family when they arrived in America, and compensation letters sent to her mother from the Titanic Relief Fund. The mementoes sold at auction were returned to her by the buyer.

Dean had enjoyed her celebrity status as the last survivor, but remembered the doomed voyage with sadness. She said: "Until the wreckage of the Titanic was found in 1985, nobody was interested in me. Who expects to become famous at that age?"

Dean had become the very last survivor of the Titanic when another woman who had been a baby on board, Barbara Dainton, from Cornwall, died in October 2007, aged 96. The last American survivor, Lillian Asplund, had died aged 99 in 2006.
